Thomas Hogan, son of Patrick Hogan

On  the old gravestone erected by Margaret Hogan after 1913,  that once stood in the Hokitika cemetery Westland, New Zealand, were recorded the deaths of 

  T H O M A S    HOG A N  native of Birr,

Kings County (now Co Offaly) Ireland,

10th December 1905, aged 73 years

 K I E R A N   H O G A N  beloved husband of  Margaret Hogan, native of Lusmagh, Birr,  King’s county, Ireland, 28th April 1913, aged 75 years

M A R G A R E T   H O G A N  wife of  Kieran Hogan  native of Bendigo, Australia, 24th December 1932, aged 70 years

K I E R A N  J  O H N  H O G A N son  of Kieran and Margaret Hogan born at Auckland Beach, Stafford, Hokitika, 23rd October 1961, aged 69 years

 The headstone was replaced by the one standing today which lists the names and dates of death only.  It was replaced because my mother, Mary Cowie and her two sisters, Kate and Teresa wished to upgrade the grave for when they were no longer here to attend to it.

10  to  12  cups  peeled  sliced  cucumbers

6  peeled   sliced   onions

1  tablespoon   mustard   seed

4   cups   white   or   cider   vinegar

1   tablespoon   sea   salt

2   teaspoons   tumeric

1   teaspoon   celery   salt

3    cups   white   sugar

Cover   cucumber   and    sliced   onions   in  

water   for   at   least   1   hour.     Drain.

In   a   saucepan   bring   to   the   boil

sugar,   mustard seed,   vinegar,   tumeric

and salts.

Add    cucumbers   and    onions   to   this   sauce

and    return   to   the   boil.     This    then   is   the

pickle.    No   thickening   required.     Sauce   can   be

drained    over   lettuce,   fish   etc.

COWIE – WORSLEY

I am looking for the descendants of ANNIE ALICE COWIE  (also known as Nancy),    (daughter of Frederick Michael Cowie and his wife Alice Annie Grace),  

who married THOMAS WORSLEY in 1919 in Chorlton Lancashire.   Known to have one son THOMAS WORSLEY living in the 1940′s.   Grandmother Alice Annie Cowie, remarried,  (Mrs William Percy Hutchfield),  lived at 83 Haworth Road, Gorton Manchester.

Members of the Priest or Morris Families are long lost Cousins, who were living in the Auckland area in the 1960′s. Remember visiting you with Elsie.

OATCAKES

120 gms, or 4ozs of medium oatmeal

(plus extra for rolling out dough etc)

1/2 teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda

a pinch salt

2 ozs of butter or oil

10 tablespoons boiling water

In a mixing bowl place dry ingredients

add melted butter or oil, stir in boiling water.

Mix well together and turn out onto oatmeal

floured board for rolling out .   Divide dough

into two  pieces.   Roll to about half centimeter

thick, use a glass to cut into circles.

Bake abt 10 minutes at 200 degrees Celcius or

400F.   Gas Mark 6.     Until golden brown around the

edges.      Cool  a minute, then place on a wire rack.

 

1 cup cooking oil

4 large eggs

2 cups white sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla essence

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup self raising white flour

1 cup plain white flour

1/2 cup cooking cocoa

 

Beat oil, eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt gently.

Mix in remaining ingredients.

Pour into lined sponge roll tin.

Bake 25 minutes at 180 degrees Celcius.

Dust with icing sugar when cold.

Cut into squares.

Serve with raspberry topping

Cream/yoghurt or ice cream.

1 heaped teaspoon psylluim hulls

1 heaped teaspoon powdered licorice root

1 heaped teaspoon slippery elm

 

Place these ingredients into a tall glass.

3/4 fill glass with water.   Stir until all combined.

Cover.   Leave overnight.    In the morning

add orange or just juice of choice or lemon.

Stir  and drink on an empty stomach.

I personally have found this works for me as I

have a reflux problem compounded by a shakitsky

ring (a birth defect) but this drink keeps me well.

TIGERS MILK

TISSUES REBUILDER

2 eggs

1 tablespoon Lecithin Granules

1 tablespoon Safflower Oil (or mixed Vegetable

oils)

2 rounded teaspoons Dolomite Powder

(or substitute)

1/2 cup Plain Yoghurt

1 teaspoon Kelp Powder

1/2 cup Brewers Yeast

2 cups Milk

1/2 cup full cream Milk Powder

1/4 cup Soya Flour

1/4 cup Wheatgerm

1 teaspoon Vanilla Essence

 

 Add a further one pint or 1 cup of  Milk

 

Nutmeg and Cinnamon can be added.

Place in the Blender and blend well.

 

Will keep a week in Frig

Take 1/2 cup 3 times a day.    Squeeze in

Orange Juice or Raro Powder  if you like an

Orange Flavour.   Glucose can be added to the

1/2 cup doses.

( good quality Coconut Milk could be used as

a substitue for the dairy items)

Take also Vitamin Tablets A. C. & E

MY GRANNIE’S TONIC

3 eggs

1 dozen lemons

1/2 bottle good Rum

1/2 lb honey

Wash eggs, place in basin whole, the  shell and all,

Squeeze the lemons and pour the juice onto

the top of the eggs.   Cover and leave 24 hours.

Beat with eggbeater, or place in Blender,

then strain.

Add warm honey and Rum.   Blend again.

Bottle and use a small tumblerfull 2 or 3 times

daily.    Keep in Frig.

This old remedy was given to people  who had

suffered great weight loss, or recovering from

childbirth.

The old timers swore by it!  

MIGRAINE REMEDY

1 teaspoon Baking Soda

1 Glass of Lemonade.

Combine ….and SIP ….all day!
